Vsetín latest news

The six times Czech Champions have finally had their Extraliga license withdrawn for the up and coming season. The court of arbitration agreed with the APK/ leagues to decision to ban them from taking part because of their failure to meet the the financial guarantees the league asks of all its members.

The team hope to compete within the 1.liga but even that looks highly unlikely as all the teams are in place, the fixture lists have been made and Vsetín have lost yet more sponsors. It really does look to be the end of pro hockey in Vsetín

Polar Bears Suck At Hockey:

Polar bears suck so much at hockey that even the worlds worst and most biased sports commentator ' John 'Motty' Motson knows how crap they are and well here is the proof:

I will give the polar bears keeper some credit though, it makes more attempts to save pucks than Trofi ever did...

Hemingway + Stutzel Join:

One is a former St.Louis Blue and the other an ex Phoenix Coyote, yes that's right the Caps signing pedigree has just stepped up a level or two. Forwards Colin Hemingway ( 3 game Blue) and Mike Stutzel ( 9 game Dog) will add a hell of a lot of skill and fire power to the Capitals offensive lines. With their previous experience's both players will be expected to regularly find the back of the opposition netminder's goal, I expect they will do just that. Both guys also bring some more size and grit to the team, Hemingway is 6'' and Stutzel measures in a 6''2'. I'm pretty sure Stutzel will be a fantastic skater too, up their with Jan Krajicek's ability to twist and turn and move away from opponents, he would have had to have shown that level of ability and some to have signed up and played for Tappara in the Finnish SM-Liiga. I will be looking out for Tappara fans with his name on their jersey now when I'm over in Finland later this year.

Oh and just in case you didn't see the P.R release from the club Hemingway is probably best known for scoring this goal during his college days: I hope he shows off some of those skills during his time as an Edinburgh Capitals player.

I honestly and fully believe that these two signings are as good as if not better than anything any other team in the league has to offer in their line-up. I can see the club doing a lot of good things next season. We will be extremely competitive. This is the Capitals revolution II.

You Tube: promoting the Edinburgh Capitals

Well that's a fight in last season's SNL between Dundee Tigers and South Ayr. No apparent connection to the Edinburgh Capitals. Oh, wait a minute... what's the most recent comment on the video?

"got battered? i was in the changing room when the fight broke out and we kicked the fuck out of you. im playing for the edinburgh capitals soon so il see you again scum fucking cunts"

Nice.

SPHL: why we need it.

The last few days have seen the rumour mill almost at breaking point with talk of mistreatment of players, employees of the club resigning, un-communist distribution of post-game pizzas and of course the gossip with the furthest reaching potential consequences, the withdrawal of a second tier senior side for next season.

We have also seen a vast improvement in our British recruiting policy of late. Yes, our hand was rather forced with the switch to the Elite and the movement of Lynch, Dunbar, Wilson and Hough into full or semi retirement but we were quick to sign up Garside and Rich after spells in North America, Kyle Horne's after his personal situation resulted in his move back to Scotland and the capture of Bowie after Paisley's troubles of last season will hopefully continue to pay off

for many more seasons to come.

The only players who broke through from the SNL squad to the senior team before the 05-06 season were Neil Hay and Danny Mac. That's an average of one player every three and a half years.

So having said all of that, why is the SNL team so important? It comes down to two reasons: the importance of Brit players in the EIHL and the benefits of the SNL as part of a player’s development.

As my colleague ably pointed out on the official Capitals forum, the main aim of the SNL team is not to sweep the board in the four competitions, as we did in the 2001-2002 season, but “blooding the youngsters in a competitive environment and giving them plenty of ice time”.

The SNL is a key stage in progressing junior players into Elite players. The SNL sees promising Murrayfield teenagers icing against grown men, many of whom with BNL experience, for the first time; icing in games with hundreds of fans watching; being introduced to a more professional set up and demanding schedule. The step up from u19 (or u20 from next season) to Elite is huge. Without an SNL team all of these important developmental steps are lost and the slow introduction from junior hockey to a national professional level disappears immediately.

The SNL also gives a chance for all of the Caps’ Brits to get far more competitive ice time than any of the other team’s domestic contingent. Keeping the third liners match fit and sharp when they are not logging that much time on the ice for the top team.

The role of British players in the EIHL should not be underestimated. The sheer volume of available imports means that very little separates the imported section of the different Elite club's line-ups. The difference between teams competing for the championship often comes down to the strength in depth, which due to the import restrictions translates directly into the quality of the British players at a club's disposal.

Fans are quick to blame injuries to key players as a reason for a disappointing season but you don't need to scan through decades of data to realise that the man hours lost to injury varies fairly little between teams. When imports are sidelined for a lengthy spell a new man if often brought in as cover, but when the player is only sitting out a couple of weeks that tenth forward needs to step in and play a part.

What coaches require and expect of a third line has undergone serious change since the debut of the Elite League. No longer are Mookie, Laurie D and Hough sent out to give Saul and Kaye a breather. The advantage of being able to play a Tait, Longstaff or Clarke on the top two lines was soon noticed and British players are increasingly requested to put up decent numbers, make plays, put the puck in the net and not just be a third wheel on an imported one-two punch.

The increase in the import limit has ironically seen Beattie, McPherson and Dalgliesh gain decent ice time alongside non-Murrayfield trained youth Bowie, Garside and Rich. More were set to follow: Daly, Christie and Glasgow for starters, but those three have gone to, or are strongly rumoured to be heading toward, Fife's SNL team while McPherson was snapped up by Milton Keynes and Beattie's future remains undecided.

The talented youth of Murrayfield Ice Hockey Club are heading to the exit doors in serious numbers already, the withdrawal of a second tier senior team will surely increase the migration and have a serious impact on the Elite Capitals ability to move off the bottom of the table.

Crane swoops in:

Woo, Yay and Woo once more....

Finally the Capitals announce something and luckily enough for the fans it was a new player signing. D-man Ryan Crane has joined the club after playing his hockey in the ECHL and Norway last season. He split his time between the Pensacola Ice Pirates and Lillehammer in the top Norwegian division. He looks to be a bit of a journey man having played for several clubs over the last few years but I am hoping he brings alot of experience to the club. His stats indicate that he is a stay back defender but he put up 12 points in 18 games with Lillehammer so maybe he can carry that on and be a little more offensive minded with the Capitals too.

I can see Crane playing on the same line as Jeff State depending on his skating speed that is. I have been in contact with some Reading Royals fans and they tell me State is a good physical presence out on the ice and that the opposition will think twice about any of the naughty stuff but when it comes to actually playing the game he can be caught out of position and doesn't have the legs to get himself back in to the right places. The Royals fans also gave me some information on what to expect from Doug Christiansen. Isn't the Internet wonderful. The Royals fan had this to say about our director of hockey.

" Christiansen is good player as long as he plays as a forward. It is his best position on the ice. Unfortunately for us The Royals had this "grand experiment" last year where they moved him back to play defense, and it failed miserably. He was just too big and lumbering to play defense, he couldn't get back on pucks and left a lot of open ice behind him, but like I said play him as a forward and he could be very useful for the Capitals "

I'm pretty sure the signings the club have announced so far will give us a strong, steady foundation to build on. We are building from the back and now have size and presence on the ice now. Considering we are usually softer than Graham Nortan and Julian Clarey put together, the "new" way of thinking is a welcome change for the Capitals. I do however hope we don't completely forget what has gone before at the Capitals and sign up some European forwards, their puck handling ability and skills in the corners would be the perfect match for our grittier, tougher Canadians. Fingers crossed for that...

A Paws For Thought

The latest rumors emanating from Capsville is that a new, sleeker Paws outfit is being created by geneticists in Murrayfield laboratories. Expect there to be as much discussion upon the unveiling as there were for those skin-tight Nike jerseys.

With any luck I won't end up looking like Lily Allen in fancy dress as a panda.

Oh Danny Boy, the Flyers the Flyers are calling.

So Mad Dog has done the once unthinkable and joined Lewis Christie and Blair Daly in swapping a potential EIHL Knockout Cup semi-final appearance for the life of the doomed in South-facing Fife.
John Haig's similarly timed departure to Dundee has made Kirckaldy an ever-so-slightly more appealing proposition from a Caps' point of view and may perhaps have helped the Flyers pass Danny's credit check.

That news, coupled with the imminent return of a new-look Paws, has resulted in a flurry of activity on the Caps' website previously unseen this off-season.
This strangely hasn't focused on the morality of a realignment of such magnitude, perhaps showing the continuing effect of Fife's lack of participation in the top tier.
The main argument seems to boil down to whether the Caps provide food on away trips and if the alleged necessity of Danny having to dip into his own pocket to "Go Large" at Newport Pagnell services one too many times has forced him into the deranged mental state that one must surely be in to sign for the others.

Some on the official forum seem to think that expenses to cover food on away trips is part of some basic human right that must be adhered to, however the European Convention on Human Rights fails to feature the word "food" in the entire sixty-six article legislature. It's also well known that if the team simply took up Freddie Oduya's "Shot of cinnamon and fourty-five minute stroll around the service station car park"routine then a fifty pound Holland & Barrett voucher would probably suffice for the season's food allowance.
In actual fact the team only need to fulfill the terms of the player's contract of employment. If there's nothing in the contract about food on away trips or not having to car pool with Lynchie then the team don't need to dole out pasta on the bus and can shove players next to Mookie in the back of a Fiesta.

The main point here is that we are competing with other clubs for players. Not just EIHL teams but EPL, SPHL and others. Not just for the imports but also for the Danny Macs, Matthew Richs and Grant McPhersons.
If other teams start to offer players packages full of incentives, be it cars, flats, university degrees or J-Lo's old tour bus to travel to away games, then it's up to the Capitals to try and keep pace with the way the league is going to the best of their abilities and limitations lest find themselves in a position of players turning down offers to enjoy more relaxing/profitable surroundings.

The other potential turn of events that led to his departure that has gone largely un-noticed is that Danny was simply surplus to requirements at the Caps Mk IX. The forum was similarly ablaze when Grant McPherson upped sticks for Milton Keynes and then a year later Matty Rich left for Newcastle. This season it's the turn of Danny Mac. Hopefully Scott has made the correct call once more and the departure of Danny, who was mostly being used as a make-shift in both defence and on the third line, will not be rued.
